Civic Seals: Recognition Program for Students and Schools

Recently, several states have initiated "civic seals" programs to incentivize student learning and preparation for lifelong, informed, and engaged participation in our constitutional democracy. These programs, with broad bipartisan support, have established diploma seals for students who have demonstrated outstanding civic literacy and readiness and have celebrated schools that are especially supportive of preparing students for civic engagement. In this session, we will hear a presentation about the national movement toward civic seals, research examining the impact of civic seals nationally, and existing civic programs in Maryland. Following the presentation, our panel will discuss how such a program could be designed for Maryland students and schools. We will hear from stakeholders about how educators, students, families, civic and service club sponsors, and community partners might work together to prepare for such a program and to maximize its positive impact.
