Street Law partners with Anne Arundel County Public Schools
In summer 2019, Street Law received grant funding to write and pilot several new resources to pair with its deliberative discussion strategy. The project required that Street Law team with a school district to provide professional development on the discussion strategy, then provide teachers with access to the materials and support in using the materials. Through professional networks, Street Law connected with Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ Department of Social Studies to offer 20 high school teachers the workshop in August 2019, funded by the grantor, the Longview Foundation. Throughout the school year, teachers used the pilot resources in their classrooms using the Deliberation strategy and provided Street Law with feedback to make improvements. One student who participated in a Deliberation reflected that the process “teaches us to listen to understand and not to respond.”
In summer 2020, the materials were released to the public.
Street Law occasionally receives grant funding to provide school districts and state education agencies with fully-funded professional development. Building connections between Street Law and other Maryland school districts opens up more opportunities for partnerships like this with other school districts from across the state.
